The Moldovan Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development has submitted a draft law on banning the activity of airlines from several countries on the territory of the country. This was reported by esp.md portal on January 2.

"According to the draft, a significant number of airlines from various states will be included in the list of carriers that will be banned from operating in Moldovan airspace. Among them are carriers from Russia, Armenia, Afghanistan, Tanzania, Iran and other countries," the material says.

In total, the list includes airlines from 22 countries.

The ministry said that the main purpose of the project is to bring Moldovan legislation in line with international standards, especially the European Union, in the field of civil aviation. In this way, the authorities seek to improve the safety of air transportation and protect the rights of consumers.

A document of the authority published on the portal identifies the following Russian airlines that may be banned: "Aurora", "Aviastar-TU", "Izhavia", "Yakutia Airlines", "RusJet", "YuVT Aero", "Sibir", Smartavia, IRAERO, "Ural Airlines", "ALROSA, NordStar, RusLine, Yamal Airlines, NordWind, Ikar, I Fly, Pobeda, Aeroflot, Rossiya, SKOL and Utair."

"These companies will have to suspend their activities in Moldova if the project is approved," the material said.

The project has been put up for public discussion until January 9.

Earlier, on December 30, 2024, former Moldovan President and leader of the Party of Socialists (PSRM) Igor Dodon said that the government to be formed in the country after parliamentary elections in 2025 will restore relations with Russia. In addition, he promised to lift all sanctions that are not in Moldova's national interests, including the resumption of direct flights to Moscow and money transfers.

A day earlier, Dodon called on opposition forces to unite in order to achieve a change of power in the country. According to him, the activities of the ruling Action and Solidarity party are completely contrary to the interests of citizens.

Last October, Moldova held a referendum on the country's European integration and presidential elections among 11 candidates. Only nine out of 36 Moldovan districts voted in favor of changing the Constitution for the sake of joining the EU, and in Gagauzia more than 90% of those who voted were against European integration. On 25 October, the Moldovan Central Electoral Commission recognized the referendum as valid, approved its final results and sent them to the country's Constitutional Court for approval.
