The transition of the Moldovan state district power plant (SDPP) from gas to coal has gone smoothly. This was reported on January 1 by the Minister of Economic Development of the unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan Republic (TMR), Sergei Obolonik, at a meeting of the operational headquarters, the broadcast of which was published on the YouTube channel of the presidential press service.

"The transition was regular. It is clear that the blocks are old, the system of operational control takes place in manual mode. Nevertheless, everything works. Specialists of the Moldavskaya GRES confirm that the generation is taking place almost normally," the minister said.

He specified that the station will generate 105 MWh starting from January 1, while 8 MWh will be completed by the Dubasari HPP.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that the Moldavskaya GRES switched to using coal due to the cessation of gas supplies from Russia.

At the same time, centralized heating was cut off in Transnistria after Gazprom stopped supplying Russian gas via Ukraine. Gas stopped flowing to Moldova, too, because of the country's outstanding debts. In turn, Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean did not recognize the debt and threatened to sue.

The day before, energy expert Serghei Ungureanu said that Moldova had a difficult situation in the energy sector, and the purchase of electricity from Europe would hit the country's economy. He noted that Moldova has not agreed to continue gas transit through Ukraine, which means that Transnistria will not receive gas and will not be able to produce enough cheap electricity.

"Gazprom and Moldovagaz signed a five-year contract for gas supplies in the fall of 2021. It stipulated Chisinau's payment of the debt for supplies in the past few years. The entire volume was estimated at $709 million, of which Chisinau officially recognizes only $8.6 million.
