TPP in Transnistria switched to coal after Russian gas supplies were stopped

The Moldovan state district power plant (MGRES) in Transnistria has switched to using coal due to the cessation of gas supplies from Russia. This was reported on January 1 by the agency "News of Transnistria" in Telegram.
According to the material, coal reserves will be enough for 50-52 days. "All this time Transnistria will definitely be with electricity," the publication said.
MGRES has stopped supplying electricity to Moldova, as the relevant contract has expired, the agency added.
In addition, it recalled the absence of attempts on the part of the Moldovan authorities to find a way to settle the debt dispute with Gazprom before the New Year.
Earlier in the day, centralized heating was switched off in Transnistria after Gazprom stopped supplying Russian gas through Ukraine. Gas stopped flowing to Moldova as well because of the country's unpaid debts. In turn, Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean did not recognize the debt and threatened to sue.
The day before, energy expert Serghei Ungureanu said that Moldova had a difficult situation in the energy sector, and the purchase of electricity from Europe would hit the country's economy. He noted that Moldova has not agreed to continue gas transit through Ukraine, so Transnistria will not receive it and will not be able to produce enough cheap electricity.
"Gazprom and Moldovagaz signed a five-year contract for gas supplies in the fall of 2021. It stipulated Chisinau's payment of the debt for supplies in the past few years. The entire volume was estimated at $709 million, of which Chisinau officially recognizes only $8.6 million.
