The U.S. Treasury Department has imposed sanctions against two Russian citizens and a research and analysis center. This was confirmed by a statement published on the website of the U.S. agency on December 31.

The sanctions were imposed against Valery Korovin, Olesya Mendeleeva, as well as against the Center for Geopolitical Expertise, located in Moscow.

Restrictions imply the freezing of assets that are under American jurisdiction, and a ban on any financial transactions with persons and organizations on the restrictive list.

Earlier, on December 10, it became known that the USA imposed a number of visa restrictions against 17 Russian officials in connection with the Ukrainian conflict. According to the statement of the US State Department, the sanctions were imposed in accordance with Section 212 of the US Immigration and Nationality Act. The diplomatic department did not disclose the names of the Russian citizens on the list.

Prior to that, on November 7, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the volume of Western anti-Russian sanctions is unprecedented from a historical point of view, but the restrictions have not inflicted on Russia "a crushing blow, from which it will not be able to recover". The head of state emphasized that no sanctions will change the fact that Russia is actually needed by the world.

Western countries increased sanctions pressure on Russia after the start of the special operation to protect civilians in Donbass, which was announced on February 24, 2022.
