The arrest warrant for South Korean President Yun Seok-yol, whose powers were suspended as a result of impeachment, is invalid according to his lawyers. This was reported by Yonhap News Agency on Dec. 31.

"The arrest warrant was issued at the Western District Court and not at the Seoul Central District Court where the trial is pending, which is contrary to principles and precedent," the publication quoted the defense lawyer as saying.

The president's defense team also stressed that the warrant was issued "without the authority to investigate," making it illegal and invalid.

Earlier in the day it became known that the court issued a warrant for the arrest of the President of South Korea Yoon Seok-yol.

The situation in the Republic of Korea escalated in early December, when President Yun Seok-yol declared martial law. The reason for such a step he called the threat of paralysis of power, arising from attempts to conduct impeachment proceedings. Commander of the emergency regime - Chief of Staff of the Ground Forces Park Ahn-soo noted that until the lifting of martial law in the republic prohibited the activities of the parliament, political parties and associations. Military equipment was brought to the streets of Seoul.

The National Assembly (Parliament) of South Korea officially voted to declare impeachment of President Yun Seok-yol on December 14. A total of 204 National Assembly members voted in favor of removing the president from office, while 85 voted against. The Constitutional Court has 180 days to issue a verdict from the time it receives the case.
