Peace talks will be the only way out for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose term in office expired on 20 May. This was reported by the German newspaper Die Welt on December 30.

As the publication notes, this is due to the fact that the US President-elect Donald Trump seeks to end the conflict.

"Donald Trump wants to end the conflict in 2025. Ukraine is significantly weakened militarily: the morale of soldiers is falling and the number of desertions is increasing. For President Zelensky, negotiations remain the only scenario", - specified in the material.

Earlier, on December 28, the Financial Times reported that Trump may force Ukraine to conclude a peace agreement without providing it with security guarantees. According to the material, the settlement will take place in the form of a major deal between the United States, Russia and China. Under the terms of the agreement, the United States will allegedly cede a number of spheres of influence.

On the same day, retired Lieutenant Colonel of the US Armed Forces Daniel Davis expressed the opinion that the position of the future President of the United States in the negotiations on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict will become weaker with each day passing after his inauguration, scheduled for January 20.

Before that, on December 22, Trump said that he was waiting for a meeting with Putin to start negotiations on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict.

The last round of talks between Russia and Ukraine took place in Istanbul on March 29, 2022. They lasted about three hours. Later, Kiev officially refused contacts with Moscow.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the background of the worsening situation in the region.
