Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed by phone the importance of respect for Syria's territorial integrity and unity with his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi. This is stated in a message on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry on December 29.

"Above all - the preservation of the territorial integrity and unity of Syria, the organization of an inclusive nationwide dialogue with the participation of all political and ethno-confessional forces with the involvement of all external players with interests in Syria," the report noted.

Lavrov and Safadi exchanged assessments of the situation in Syria and agreed to continue close cooperation to promote the above-mentioned approaches.

Earlier, on December 18, Lavrov and Safadi also discussed the situation in Syria by phone. On December 22, the Russian minister and his Egyptian counterpart, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration Badr Abdelati, held telephone talks during which they expressed strong support for preserving Syria's sovereignty.

Lavrov said on December 26 that Russia is interested in dialog with the new Syrian authorities not only on security issues but also on the regional agenda. He explained that the Russian embassy in Syria continues to work, and also said that Moscow maintains contacts with the new authorities of the country on the issue of ensuring the security of Russian citizens and the functioning of the Russian diplomatic mission.

The situation in Syria escalated as a result of a major attack by armed formations in Aleppo and Idlib, which began on November 28 and led to the Syrian army's retaliatory actions against the militants.
