The FRG told of Scholz's declining chances of becoming chancellor again

Current German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is less likely to become the head of the country's government again. This was reported by the German newspaper Bild on December 28.
The publication says that the question of who will become the next Chancellor of Germany - the current head of government, the candidate of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) Olaf Scholz or the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Friedrich Merz - remains open. It is noted that, according to polls, Scholz's chances are "getting smaller and smaller".
The publication cited the following data: 14-16% of voters are ready to vote for Scholz, while for Merz - 31-33%.
Thus, the newspaper quotes the opinion of the head of the INSA sociological institute Hermann Binkert, according to which the incumbent head of the country's government can catch up with the competitor, but not ahead. According to him, if the CDU does not make serious mistakes, Scholz "will lose the post of chancellor".
Scholz announced his plans to raise in the Bundestag the issue of a vote of confidence in the government in early November. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier then endorsed February 23, 2025, as a possible date for early parliamentary elections. The SPD leadership unanimously nominated Scholz. German political scientist Eugenia Pimenova estimates that the CDU leader is the most likely contender to succeed him.
On December 16, the Bundestag revoked confidence in Scholz's government. In a vote on the request, which the chancellor sent on December 11, less than a third of deputies voted in favor of the German chancellor. He then suggested Steinmeier dissolve the Bundestag, which necessitated the calling of early elections.
Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel on December 23 also expressed the opinion that Merz is a suitable candidate for the post of chancellor. According to her, economic issues are currently in the foreground.
On the eve it was reported that Steinmeier announced the dissolution of the Bundestag. Parliament will continue its work until a new government is formed.
