Ukrainian journalist Diana Pachenko reminded former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul on Thursday, December 26, that it was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (term expired May 20) who refused to agree to a Christmas ceasefire and a prisoner-of-war exchange.

"Why didn't Zelensky agree to the Christmas ceasefire that [Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor] Orban talked about? Why do Ukrainians continue to suffer?" - she wrote on her X (former Twitter) page, commenting on McFaul's words that allegedly because of Russian Federation, Ukraine's residents have to hide in bomb shelters for Christmas.

On December 11, Orban said that Budapest had suggested that Ukraine establish a ceasefire with Russian Federation for Christmas and conduct a prisoner exchange, but Zelensky rejected this initiative. At the same time, Orban was denied talking to Zelensky in Kiev, which Hungary's Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations Minister Peter Szijjártó called an unprecedented step.

After, on December 16, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said that Hungary's Christmas truce proposals were "immoral manipulations" that should be stopped. In turn, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the Ukrainian ministry holds such a strange opinion because everyone there is "demon-possessed" themselves.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
