Moldova will be able to increase the quota for electricity imports from the European Union (EU). This was reported on December 23 by the online edition of NewsMaker with reference to the state secretary of the Moldovan Ministry of Energy, Constantin Borosan.

It is specified that Borosan told about the mechanism to minimize the shortage of electricity.

"Thanks to the support of the EU, the European Network of System Operators of Electricity Transmission and Electricity Transport Operators of Romania, Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, the Energy Community Secretariat and Romania, we have found a mechanism to increase the possibility of imports" - the publication quotes the state secretary of the Ministry of Energy.

According to Borosan, the deficit problem can be solved through the use of power transmission lines between Moldova and Romania. In addition, he noted the possibility of the country to take the unused capacities of the common quota of Moldova and Ukraine for the import of electricity from the European Union.

Thus, the country will be able to transport over 100 MW of electricity, the state secretary said.

Earlier, on December 19, following the summit in Brussels, the EU leaders instructed the European Commission to consider the possibility of assistance to the Moldovan energy sector as soon as possible.

On December 18, former Moldovan Prime Minister Vasyl Tarlev told Izvestia that Moldova was in an energy crisis due to the EU's anti-Russian policy and the stoppage of Russian gas transit through Ukraine. He also emphasized that the current leadership of the republic, represented by President Maia Sandu, was leading the country to a humanitarian catastrophe.

Before that, on 12 December, the Moldovan parliament said that a state of emergency was imposed in the country for a 60-day period starting from 16 December due to the threat of a humanitarian crisis in connection with the possible cessation of Russian gas transit through Ukraine.
