NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has called unfair the criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (his term in office expired on 20 May) of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who refused to supply Kiev with Taurus cruise missiles. This was reported on December 23 by the Tagesspiegel newspaper with reference to the German DPA agency.

Scholz said on December 16 that Germany would not help the Kiev authorities to the detriment of its own security, in particular to transfer Taurus missiles and send its military to Ukraine.

"I have often told Zelensky that he should stop criticizing Olaf Scholz because I think it is unfair," the NATO secretary general said.

It is specified that Scholz was also criticized for calling Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Rutte called Scholz's assistance to Ukraine impressive. According to him, Germany is second only to the United States in terms of military support to Kiev.

At the same time, Scholz expressed support for Kiev during his visit to Ukraine on December 2. Kremlin spokesman Dmitriy Peskov called the statements about support for Kiev an example of a destructive line of European leaders. On the same day, the chancellor announced the allocation of €650 million worth of arms to Ukraine.

Afterwards, on December 4, on his return to Berlin, Scholz said that Germany would not authorize Ukraine to launch strikes with long-range weapons deep into Russian territory, nor would it supply Taurus cruise missiles.

The special operation to defend Donbass, which was announced by the Russian president on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the aggravated situation in the region.
