Russian Health Ministry reports serious condition of two injured after train crash


After the collision of a passenger train Murmansk - St. Petersburg and a freight train in the Murmansk region, the condition of two of the 11 victims is assessed as serious. This was reported to journalists on December 18 by Alexei Kuznetsov, Assistant Minister of Health of the Russian Federation.
"The provision of medical care to the injured has been taken under personal control by Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko," Kuznetsov said.
He pointed out that seven ambulance crews are already working at the site, additional ones have also been sent. In addition, a Mi-8 helicopter of rescue aviation has flown to help, with 20 specialists on board.
Russian Presidential Commissioner for Children's Rights Maria Lvova-Belova said in her Telegram channel that one of the victims was a teenager, diagnosed with head injury and fractures. She added that her team was in touch with the children's ombudsman in the Murmansk region, Alevtina Andreeva.
Thecollision between the two trains occurred earlier in the day when the passengertrain arrived at the Knyazhaya station in the Murmansk region. The Russian Railways holding company said that among the injured there is one conductor, the rest are passengers, one of them is trapped inside the car and rescuers are working to get him out.
Footage from inside the train shows passengers trying to move from one carriage to the next, but it could not be done because the inter-carriage doors were damaged and jammed. Some people could not take warm clothes, they had to evacuate outside in the freezing cold in light clothing.
Passenger Julia, who was in the dining car at the time of the collision, told Izvestia that the ceiling and compartment doors collapsed in one of the train cars. According to the girl, the passengers are being assisted, and the situation at the scene is calm.
After the train collision, the transport department of the Investigative Committee (IC) of Russia opened a criminal case under Article 263 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Violation of the rules of safety of movement and operation of railway transport").
