Turkey has conveyed to the European Union (EU) a position on the need for a ceasefire in Ukraine. This was announced by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on December 17.

"We have outlined our observations and positions on achieving an early ceasefire in Ukraine," the president said at a briefing following talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Ankara.

In addition, Erdogan said that observations on ensuring a just peace were also outlined.

Earlier, on November 20, Erdogan said that US President Joe Biden 's authorization for Ukraine to strike Russian territories with ATACMS missiles puts the entire world at risk of a new large-scale war. The Turkish leader called the decision a game with fire and added that the US side would not achieve anything.

Before that, on November 19, the Turkish president said that NATO should think about the disclosure of Russia's updated nuclear doctrine. In addition, he called it a retaliatory measure.

Russian President Vladimir Putin approved theupdated nuclear doctrine on December 19. According to the document, Russia reserves the right to use such weapons in response to an attack against it or its allies using nuclear or other weapons of mass destruction. In addition, Russia may launch a nuclear strike if an attack threatening territorial integrity is launched against it or Belarus.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which Putin announced on February 24, 2022, is ongoing. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the aggravated situation in the region.
