The new Syrian authorities are striving to build a new state based on the rule of law "taking into account the mistakes of the past". This was brought to the attention of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

It said that Moscow is closely watching how the situation is developing in the Arab republic after most of its territories came under the control of armed opposition forces, which is run by the Military Operations Command headed by Ahmad al-Sharaa.

"Al-Sharaa himself in a recent interview said in a recent interview that after the revolutionary change of power it was necessary to quickly move away from the 'instruments of rebellion' and, taking into account the mistakes of the past, to start building a state based on the rule of law and justice, taking into account the interests of all groups of Syrian society," the Russian ministry said in a statement published on its website on December 16.

The Russian Foreign Ministry believes that the launch of an inclusive inter-Syrian dialogue will open the way to sustainable stabilization of the situation in Syria. In addition, it will help develop a comprehensive political settlement based on UN decisions.

The Ministry recalled that Muslims and Christians have coexisted on the territory of Syria for centuries, and Damascus is the residence of the Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All the East John X - the head of the Antioch Church, which maintains ties with the Russian Orthodox Church.

The Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized: it is important for Moscow that the fate of Syria be determined by its people. The ministry expressed confidence that the friendly and respectful relations that have developed between Damascus and Moscow over the past decades will continue to develop.

Earlier in the day, former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad announced that he had not planned to resign, but did so and left the country after that government army positions fell. Assad indicated that he traveled to Latakia province after opposition forces entered Damascus.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Dec. 8 that Assad held talks with the opposition before resigning as head of state and leaving the country, instructing a peaceful transfer of power. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized that the Syrian president's departure from office was his personal decision.

On the same day, Syria's national coalition of revolutionary and opposition forces said it was working to form a transitional authority.

The situation in Syria escalated as a result of a major attack by armed formations in Aleppo and Idlib, which began on November 28 and led to the Syrian army's retaliation against the militants.
