Demographic indicators in Ukraine resemble an hourglass, where the narrow neck in the middle is occupied by men and women aged 18-24. This was stated by former CIA analyst Larry Johnson in an interview with YouTube channel Judging Freedom on December 16.

"The hourglass is wide at the top and bottom, narrow in the middle. This is what Ukraine's demographics look like: the neck in the middle is men and women between the ages of 18 and 24," the analyst pointed out.

He also said that the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) were suffering catastrophic losses amid a shortage of human resources.

Earlier, on October 24, the Russian Foreign Ministry's ambassador for special assignments, Rodion Miroshnik, said that the demographic situation in Ukraine was approaching catastrophic. According to him, the reality is much worse than the data cited by the United Nations (UN) in its recent report.

On October 22, Florence Bauer, the regional director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia at the UN Population Fund, said at a briefing in Geneva that Ukraine's population has decreased by 10 million people since the start of the conflict in February 2022. According to her, the country's population decline was due to "a combination of factors".

On 19 October, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (his term of office expired on 20 May) admitted that there is indeed an outflow of Ukraine's young population. The head of the Kiev regime specified that this was due to mobilization, stressing that at the moment he had no plans to lower the draft age.

In October, the Ukrainian government announced a reduction in the country's population to 25.2 million people by 2051. It was noted that on January 1, 2022 the population was 42 million people, in July 2024 - 35.8 million. It is specified that 31.1 million people live in the territory controlled by Ukraine. Among the causes of population decline were the military conflict, low birth rate, increased mortality, migration, aging of the population and others.

Before that, on July 14, UN experts reported that the population of Ukraine would drop to 15.3m people by 2100. These data are published in the table of the report on demography in the countries of the world. According to the data for 2020, Ukraine had more than 44 million people.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (his term expired on 20 May) signed the law on toughening mobilization on 16 April. The document specifies which citizens are subject to mobilization and toughens penalties for evading service. There are no provisions on demobilization in the law.

Martial law in Ukraine has been in effect since February 2022. Later, the Verkhovna Rada repeatedly extended it. Most men aged between 18 and 60 are forbidden to leave the country.
