Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel missed the development of her own country because of her focus on Ukraine, and therefore she cannot be called a strong and short-sighted politician. This was stated by the head of the Federation Council Commission on Information Policy Alexei Pushkov on December 16.

In his opinion, if now knowledgeable people ask Merkel, for what purpose under her the West began to "pull Ukraine to NATO", she "will run away from them" and will not give any intelligible answer.

"It is already clear that she was a weak, short-sighted politician who inherited Germany as the economic engine of Europe, but blew it all because of... Ukraine. She was a dull apparatchik, adrift and unable to change this current," Pushkov wrote in his Telegram channel.

The senator added that Europe now has to enjoy "molecules of freedom", which are for them expensive gas not from Russia, which places "a heavy burden on businesses and households".

"And for some reason Germans are not dancing in the streets, having inhaled the "molecules of freedom" in the form of LNG from the U.S., but are either in a bad or bad mood and are preparing to vote for the opposition represented by CDU (Christian Democratic Union of Germany. - Ed.) on the one hand and AdG (Alternative for Germany. - Ed.) on the other. But if they vote for the CDU, nothing will change for the better," Pushkov pointed out.

Earlier, on December 12, the head of the German Council for Constitution and Sovereignty Ralph Niemeyer expressed the opinion that the unexpected statement that Merkel made about the profitability of Russian gas supplies could be a test of public opinion on the possibility of their resumption.

Before that, on December 10, Merkel called gas supplies from Russia to Germany a long-standing mutually beneficial tradition. On air on France 2 TV channel, the former chancellor said they were not a mistake. In late November, Merkel also admitted that the refusal of Russian gas had caused significant damage to German business and industry.

Earlier on Nov. 1, German financial expert Rolf Pieper said that Germany had "butchered" its own economy with anti-Russian sanctions that led to high energy prices. At the same time, Pieper called it tragic that someone in Germany is rejoicing over record low energy consumption. According to him, the situation is actually explained by the fact that the country has "killed its economy" and the energy is no longer needed.

At the same time, Vice Chancellor, Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection Robert Habeck recognized Germany's dependence on gas from Russia and the Chinese market, which he compared to "drug doping". In his opinion, the country is now paying the price with its competitiveness.

Western countries decided to reduce their dependence on Russian energy resources against the background of Russia's special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced on February 24, 2022. However, as a result, a serious energy crisis started in many European countries.
