The interior ministers of Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Qatar, Lebanon, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Iraq have called for a cessation of hostilities in Syria. This was reported on December 14 in a statement issued by the Jordanian Foreign Ministry after the meeting in the city of Aqaba.

"The meeting discussed the developments in Syria in recent weeks. The participants of the meeting emphasized that <...> it is necessary to immediately stop all hostilities," Al-Mamlakat TV channel quoted the text of the statement.

In addition, the foreign ministers also called for creating conditions for the return of Syrian refugees and providing them with the necessary assistance.

Earlier, on December 8, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, after negotiations with the opposition, left the post of head of state and left the country, instructing to carry out the transfer of power peacefully.

On the same day, the national coalition of revolutionary and opposition forces in Syria announced that it was working on the formation of a transitional authority.

Against this backdrop, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the deployment of forces along the Syrian border to ensure the safety of Golan Heights communities and Israeli citizens. Netanyahu said that the demarcation agreement with Syria has been terminated due to the withdrawal of Syrian troops.

The situation in Syria has escalated following a major attack by militias in Aleppo and Idlib, which began on Nov. 28 and led to a Syrian army response against the militants.
