CDU politician calls for launching peacekeeping mission in Ukraine


German Bundestag deputy from the Christian Democratic Union Roderich Kiesewetter has said that at the moment it is necessary to organize a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine. He said in an interview with Der Spiegel magazine on December 13.
"As long as there is no ceasefire and no demarcation line, the prerequisites, both military and diplomatic, are not in place. A peacekeeping mission is still a long way off, but it is reasonable to start planning it now," the politician said.
Kiesewetter also noted that the new government, which will be announced after the elections, should be involved to send a sign to Moscow.
Prior to that, on December 10, Friedrich Merz, candidate for Chancellor of Germany from the Christian Democratic and Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU), said that the situation on the contact line for Ukraine has become critical.
On the same day, Friedrich Merz, a candidate for the post of German chancellor and head of the CDU, arrived in Kiev on a visit. The politician's trip comes just a week after the official visit of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
On December 6, the Free Democratic Party of Germany (FDP) introduced a resolution on sending Taurus missiles to Ukraine for discussion in the Bundestag. In it, the parliamentary group calls on the federal government to provide Ukraine with Taurus cruise missiles to attack Russian military-strategic facilities.
The special operation to defend Donbass, the start of which was announced by the Russian president on February 24, 2022, is ongoing. The decision was taken against the background of the aggravated situation in the region.
