Happy New Year: beautiful postcards
New Year's Eve is one of the most ancient holidays. In the times of pagan Russia, it was an important part of the agricultural calendar, the starting point of a new life cycle. However, it is not known when exactly our ancestors celebrated the beginning of the year. Chronicle sources indicate different dates: the spring solstice (March 20-21), Pancake Day, the day of the winter solstice (December 25).
After the baptism of Russia in 988, March 1 became the official date of the New Year. In 1492, Tsar John III issued a decree that moved the celebration to September 1. He also ordered to hold lavish festivities on this day, and at midnight in Moscow gave a solemn volley of cannons.
The modern date of the New Year, on the night of January 1, was established by Peter the Great. He signed the corresponding decree in 1699. The document not only introduced a new system of chronology in the country, but also contained instructions on the conduct of the holiday. Thus, during the week citizens were ordered to have fun, decorate houses with fir branches, and in the evenings to burn fires, launch fireworks and organize gun salutes.
In the XIX century, the first New Year and Christmas cards appeared in Russia. Sending such cards quickly gained popularity, and soon they were sent all over the country. Many famous artists such as Nikolai Roerich, Alexander Benois, Ilya Shishkin, Konstantin Bakovsky and others participated in the design of the cards. Most often they depicted winter landscapes, playing children, angels and other festive subjects.
After the revolution of 1917, the celebration of New Year and Christmas was banned. However, people continued to celebrate them unofficially, and in 1936 the Soviet leadership returned the New Year to the calendar. Then the usual attributes of the celebration appeared: Santa Claus, a decorated Christmas tree with a five-pointed star on top, feasts.
In the 1940s, New Year cards returned. Initially they depicted front scenes, but later they were replaced by everyday scenes. Subsequently, postcards became a kind of "trend indicator" in society: in the year of Yuri Gagarin's flight into space, rockets were printed on New Year cards, in the 1960s and 1970s - novelties of technology. The most popular subject was the Kremlin with chimes against the night sky.
Since 1954, in the Kremlin for children and teenagers began to hold a general Christmas tree, to which invited children from all regions of the country. And in the 1970s, the tradition of a solemn speech by the head of state and the chimes at midnight was established.
Drawings with wishes and the Green Wooden Snake
In modern Russia, the celebration of the New Year covers the whole country. Already in early December on the streets appear dressed up Christmas trees, bright garlands, snowmen, figures of Santa Claus and Snow Maiden. It is not uncommon to see the image of a certain animal - the symbol of the coming year according to the Eastern calendar.
The tradition to associate the year with one or another animal came to our country from China. In the Celestial Empire believe that each year is patronized by one of the 12 eastern signs of the zodiac: Rat, Bull, Tiger, Rabbit (Cat), Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep (Goat), Monkey, Rooster, Dog or Boar. The symbol of the year can be associated with one of the five elements: gold, wood, water, fire and earth. In total, there are 60 combinations that make up the 60-year cycle.
The symbol of 2025 will be the Green Tree Snake. In China, this animal is treated with great respect, considering it the embodiment of wisdom, flexibility and cunning. In eastern legends and fairy tales, snakes often act as helpers of heroes and companions of the gods, and sometimes they themselves achieve divine power. For example, Nyuva - the Chinese goddess of marriage and matchmaking, who created people from clay, is depicted as a huge snake with a human head.
In the East, the snake is perceived as a harbinger of renewal and transformation, because one of its features is to shed its skin. Nevertheless, strong shocks in the year, which is patronized by such a calm and judicious animal, do not wait, because the main advantages of the snake is flexibility and the ability to adjust to changing circumstances.
The element of wood in Chinese culture is associated with fertility, and green color - with harmony and creation. Therefore, the year of the Green Wood Snake can bring inspiration and strength for new accomplishments. Those who will show patience and prudence, the mistress of the year will reward new opportunities and good luck.
By nature, the Green Wood Snake is peaceful and diplomatic. However, you should not underestimate her, because in a moment of danger, she is merciless to her enemies. Therefore, it is better not to provoke the anger of the mistress of the year rash actions and excessive fuss.
It is believed that the year of the Snake will be successful for those who were born in the year of the Bull, Rabbit, Sheep and Monkey. Rat, Horse and Dragon should be careful to avoid trouble. A difficult time is coming for those born in the year of the Snake, as they will have to go through benming, the "year of destiny". It is believed that this is a period of serious tests for a person, but the one who will withstand them will receive a worthy reward.
To placate the patroness of the year, astrologers recommend decorating the house with plants and natural elements, as well as including green, gold, brown or beige colors in the holiday decorations and outfits.
