The last decade of December will be marked by unstable weather in the capital region: short periods of frost and thaw will often change each other, meteorologists told Izvestia. Therefore, two scenarios are possible on New Year's Eve: the air temperature can both remain at around zero degrees Celsius and drop to -10. However, it will definitely be snowy, according to meteorologists. Those who are going to street trees on New Year's Eve should dress warmly to avoid frostbite, doctors reminded.
What will be the weather on New Year's Eve
Tatyana Pozdnyakova, a leading specialist of the Meteonovosti information agency, told Izvestia about two scenarios of New Year's weather in Moscow. According to her, forecasts for the end of December are quite contradictory. At the beginning of the last five days of the month, according to her, the weather is expected to be determined by a cyclone, so it will snow.
- And then some models say that we will be in the rear of the cyclone, which will cover everything with snow, the temperature will drop. And then on New Year's Eve in the capital region will be -5 ... -10 degrees," she explained.
The second option, according to the meteorologist, assumes that the period of relatively frosty weather will be short. Then in the last days of December, the air temperature will be close to thaw.
- The only thing we can say now is that we will not be left without snow for the New Year. It is already now more than the norm. And till the end of the year there will be no thaw in the capital region, which could significantly change the height of the snow cover, - assured Tatyana Pozdnyakova. - Therefore, there will be snow. But even when the snow and the temperature is slightly negative, it is quite comfortable for the holiday.
The main thing, according to the meteorologist, that there was no rain, which periodically happens on New Year's Eve. Because the snow mush underfoot can seriously spoil the festive mood of residents and guests of Moscow.
According to the climatic norm, the average air temperature in the capital during the day on December 31 is -4.5 degrees, and in the morning of January 1, the thermometer columns fall to -8 degrees, noted the weather center "Phobos". The height of the snow cover averages 19 cm, follows from the data on the center's website.
The coldest December 31 in the history of Moscow was in 1978, when the air cooled to -37.9 degrees, and the warmest - in 1925, when the capital was just over five degrees of heat. The snowiest was the end of 1919, when the height of snowdrifts reached 56-57 centimeters.
This year in the afternoon on December 31 in Moscow will be a slight frost, up to -6 degrees, predict in "Phobos". On the night of January 1, the thermometer may fall to -2...-7 degrees. A small snow will go with a probability of about 60%, estimate there.
So far, all forecasts for New Year's Eve are quite approximate and will be clarified in the coming days, meteorologists added.
What weather will be in January and February
In general, the weather until the end of December in the capital region will be unstable, added Tatiana Pozdnyakova.
- Waves of heat and cold will replace each other. At the same time, they will be quite short. For example, relatively frosty weather will last three or four days, and then will come a wave of heat with the same duration, - she explained.
December can be called the darkest month of the year, because until the day of the winter solstice - December 22 - sunlight appears very rarely, emphasized Tatiana Pozdnyakova.
- But we still expect that on Saturday, December 14, there will be glimmers. And the next cold wave in the last decade of the month is also likely to clear up. The sun may please us at the beginning of astronomical winter, that is, after December 22, - she said.
December and the following months of the calendar winter in Moscow and the region are predicted to be warmer than multiyear values, she added. Thus, in January, the air temperature will be above the norm by two degrees.
- This means that the average daily air temperature will be more in line with the average values of December. February will retain a positive anomaly, so the average monthly air temperature is expected to be within -3... -4 degrees, - assured the meteorologist.
Precipitation in January and February is likely to exceed the norm. Thus, in February 2024, the air temperature was also above the norm, but there was an excess of snow, recalled Tatiana Pozdnyakova.
How to avoid frostbite
During the New Year holidays it is important to carefully monitor health, especially if outdoor activities are planned, doctors reminded Izvestia. First of all, you should dress for the weather, said Olga Golyzhnikova, pediatrician of clinics of the network "RZD Medicine".
