"Izvestia" prepared touching congratulations in prose and verse to this bright holiday.
December 19, 2024 - St. Nicholas Day, men's namesakes
In the calendar of Orthodox holidays there are several dates dedicated to Nicholas the Wonderworker. So, on May 22, believers remember the transfer of his relics from Myra of Lycia to the city of Bari in Italy, on August 11 celebrate the Christmas of the saint, and on December 19 - the day of his death. The people called these dates Nikola Veshny (Summer), Nikola of Autumn and Nikola of Winter.
According to church legend, Nicholas the Wonderworker was born in the 3rd century in the Greek colony of Lycia in Asia Minor. His parents were noble but very pious people who strictly observed all the commandments of the Lord. Little Nicholas also showed an inclination to study the Holy Scriptures and stood out among his peers by his modesty and kindness.
From childhood Nicholas spent a lot of time in the temple, and having grown up, he decided to devote himself to serving God. The young man's good intention was supported by his uncle, the Bishop of Patara, who made him a reader in the church, and later ordained him a priest.
After the death of his parents, Nicholas received a rich inheritance. However, the saint was not flattered by the glitter of gold and gave away all his property to the poor. According to legend, the pious young man spent part of his capital to help his neighbor, an impoverished merchant.
The man raised three beautiful daughters, but could no longer provide a decent life for them. To feed his family, the girls were ready to trade their bodies. For the sake of their salvation, Nicholas began to secretly plant bags of gold in his neighbor's window. Thanks to this, the poor man was able to collect a dowry for his daughters and marry them off.
Subsequently, Nicholas performed many good deeds and miracles. He helped the poor, healed the sick, stood up for those who wanted to be subjected to unjust punishment. For his righteous life he was elevated to the dignity of Archbishop of Myra. As the head of the church, Nicholas became famous as a wise counselor for the faithful, as well as a fierce opponent of paganism and heresy.
Sailors and travelers treated Saint Nicholas with special reverence. According to legend, the Wonderworker saved ships caught in storms more than once, and even resurrected a dead sailor during his trip to Egypt. Therefore, he is believed to be the patron saint of all who are on the road.
Nicholas the Wonderworker died peacefully in a deep old age. For a long time his myrotochic relics were kept in Myra, but in 1087 they were stolen and transported to the Italian city of Bari, where they are still located.
The veneration of St. Nicholas in Russia began almost immediately after the adoption of Christianity in the country. The wonderworker quickly won the people's love, and holidays in his honor began to be held in villages with great fanfare. On St. Nicholas of Winter it was customary to organize a sumptuous feast, for which a bullock, bought with common money or raised by all villagers, was slaughtered. Children were treated with sweets and given small gifts.
The Orthodox Church holds solemn services and processions on the day of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. After the service, believers can gather at the festive table to spend time with relatives. In some families there is also a tradition of exchanging symbolic gifts.
Special congratulations on the holiday are received by birthday boys - men with the name Nicholas and Maxim. For them, the day of memory of the saint becomes a doubly solemn event.
