Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko has said that the European Union (EU) has lost €1.5 trillion due to sanctions against Russia. He said on December 12.

"The EU is following this self-destructive path, the Russian economy has adapted to the sanctions, no geopolitical goals can be achieved by imposing sanctions," the deputy foreign minister told reporters, commenting on the introduction of the EU's 15th package of sanctions.

Thus, according to him, the EU's chosen path of complete rejection of economic interaction with Russia will lead the EU to "self-cutting" from the world economy.

On the same day, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that the West is obsessed with anti-Russian sanctions, but Russia has adapted to them and continues to follow its course.

The day before, on December 11, Alexei Kanaev, a member of the State Duma Committee on Industry and Trade, said that anti-Russian sanctions primarily harm their initiators. He noted that the new, 15th package of EU sanctions against Russia is political in nature and does not carry significant risks for the Russian economy.

On the same day it became known that the EU ambassadors agreed on the 15th package of anti-Russian sanctions. It is noted that the new package of sanctions against Russia was formed in response to Russia's "aggression" against Ukraine.

Western countries increased sanctions pressure on Russia after the start of the special operation to protect the peaceful population of Donbas, which was announced on February 24, 2022.
