Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban will discuss with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan ways to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. The meeting will take place on December 12 in Ankara, MTI news agency reported.

"During the meeting, President Erdoğan and Viktor Orbán will discuss current international affairs, the conflict in Ukraine and the Middle East, chances for peace and numerous topics of Hungarian-Turkish relations," says Bertalan Havasci, spokesman for the head of the Hungarian government.

According to him, Hungary and Turkey reached a high-level strategic partnership at the end of 2023 and it has been developing rapidly since then.

Earlier, on December 11, Hungary suggested that Ukraine establish a Christmas Day ceasefire with Russia and make a prisoner exchange, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (whose term expired on May 20) rejected the initiative.

On the same day, Hungarian Foreign and Foreign Economic Relations Minister Péter Szijjártó said that Russia and Hungary intend to continue energy cooperation. Szijjártó noted that after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, he spoke with Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev about accelerating work on the Paks-2 nuclear power plant.

Orban's phone call with Putin became known earlier in the day. The Kremlin press service said that the conversation took place at the initiative of the Hungarian side. The report also specified that the Hungarian prime minister showed interest in helping to jointly find a solution to the political and diplomatic crisis in Ukraine, including involving Western leaders in the issue.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which Putin announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
