Imports of tequila and mescal worth about $3 billion from leading Mexican spirits producers are at risk due to the duties planned by US President-elect Donald Trump. This was reported on December 11 by the international portal Reuters, citing data from Mexican customs.

Companies such as leading spirits producer Diageo and the largest tequila producer Becle remain unprotected by Trump's possible 25% duties. Together, they dominate the U.S. beverage market and rely heavily on U.S. tequila sales, the agency wrote.

Diageo subsidiaries shipped more than 25 million liters of tequila from Mexico to the U.S. last year, according to Mexican export data provided to Reuters by ImportYeti.

That amounts to a total of 33.7 million 750-milliliter bottles, the agency calculated. Based on per-bottle prices at one of Diageo Total Wines & More's largest U.S. customers, U.S. tequila imports totaled nearly $1.6 billion.

A similar analysis of U.S. shipments of Becle's eight brands of tequila and mescal showed that their trade value was also nearly $1.6 billion.

Jefferies analysts estimated in November that prices would have to rise 10% to offset the impact of the 25% tariff.

Prior to that, on November 26, the President-elect of the United States noted that he would impose import duties of 25% on all Canadian and Mexican goods as early as the day of his inauguration, January 20, 2025, if Ottawa and Mexico City failed to fundamentally change the situation with migration across the Canadian border.

On Dec. 10, Trump proposed that Canada and Mexico become U.S. states to avoid the imposition of customs duties by Washington.
