Media revealed how Callas humiliated Merkel over call to invite Putin to summit

The new head of European Union (EU) diplomacy Kaja Kallas humiliated former German Chancellor Angela Merkel in June 2021 because of her proposal to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to the summit of European Union (EU) heads of state. About it on Monday, December 9, writes Politico with reference to sources.
The material notes that in June 2021, five months after Kai Kallas became prime minister of Estonia, she opposed Putin's invitation to the EU summit in Brussels.
Politico elaborates that despite support for the idea from German Chancellor and French President Emmanuel Macron amid rising tensions on the Ukraine-Russia border, Kallas opposed the decision.
"What is this for?" - Callas asked twice, counting on the support of Eastern European representatives.
Callas' behavior displeased Macron, who, according to the publication, pointed out to her the possible consequences of speaking out against Merkel, calling into question her continued tenure as prime minister.
On December 1, the powers of the new composition of the European Commission headed by Ursula von der Leyen began, which was approved by the European Parliament on November 27. Kallas was appointed head of European diplomacy.
On the same day, political scientist and international relations expert Enes Karakhanov told Izvestia that former Estonian Prime Minister Kallas is hardly capable of radically changing the European Union's foreign policy as high representative for foreign affairs. He noted that Kallas's appointment caused a resonance, as many in Europe consider her responsible for a number of problems.
