Representatives of the European Union countries failed to agree on the 15th package of sanctions against Russia, Reuters reported on December 6, citing sources.

According to its information, the package envisioned the extension of the Czech Republic's right to import Russian oil products, coming mainly through Slovakia. There was also talk of sanctions against tankers carrying Russian oil.

Diplomats said that the two states blocked the adoption of the draft because of disagreements over the extension of the deadline given to European companies to withdraw investments from Russia. Thus, discussions on the document will be resumed later.

Earlier, on November 28, it was reported that MEPs advocated additional sanctions against Russia. They called for restrictions in the metallurgical, nuclear, chemical and banking industries.

Before that, on November 26, Bloomberg reported that Brussels plans to impose restrictions against more than 45 oil tankers of the Russian Federation as part of the 15th package. Also under threat are more than 50 individuals and about 30 organizations.

According to economist Maxim Chirkov's assessment, which he shared with Izvestia, as a result of the anti-Russian sanctions, many European countries are teetering on the brink of recession. He expressed the opinion that the EU will hardly come up with anything new in this area and drew attention to the serious growth rates of the Russian economy.

Western countries increased sanctions pressure on Russia after the start of the special operation to protect civilians in Donbass, which was announced on February 24, 2022.
