Lavrov says there is a danger of the cold war moving into a hot phase

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, speaking at the OSCE Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM), said on December 5 that there is a possibility that the world's "cold war" is moving into a hot phase.
According to him, the US and its allies have torn up all arms control agreements concluded in the 1980s.
"It is asked, for what purpose? The answer for us is obvious - to please the desire to return NATO to the political forefront. After the Afghan disgrace, a new unifying enemy was needed. The result is a reincarnation of the Cold War, only now with a much greater risk of its transition to a hot stage," Lavrov said.
Earlier, on November 30, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that the danger of a nuclear exchange between the United States and Russia exists, but Moscow will do everything possible to avoid it. According to him, the modeling of the consequences of the use of nuclear weapons has been conducted repeatedly and the current geopolitical situation is characterized as extremely complex and tense.
Before that, on November 21, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia was making every effort to prevent a nuclear exchange with the United States. The Russian presidential spokesman expressed hope that other countries have the same position and will not engage in provocative actions.
Rear Admiral Thomas Buchanan, a spokesman for the Pentagon's Strategic Command, said that the United States would allow such a nuclear exchange in which the country would retain a reserve of strategic weapons for further leadership on the world stage.
On November 19, Russian President Vladimir Putin approved an updated Russian nuclear doctrine. The updated document includes the amendments that the head of state announced in September. In particular, for the first time a definition of a potential adversary against whom Russia is conducting nuclear deterrence was introduced.
