- Media reported a telephone conversation between the chiefs of general staff of the Russian and US Armed Forces

Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valeriy Gerasimov and Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Charles Brown held a telephone conversation on November 27 to discuss security issues, including the conflict in Ukraine, for the first time in more than a year. This was reported by Bloomberg news agency on December 4.
"The leaders discussed a number of global and regional security issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine," the publication said.
It is specified that at the request of General Gerasimov, his American counterpart Brown agreed not to announce the conversation in advance.
Earlier, on July 31, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that the head of the Russian Defense Ministry Andrei Belousov warned during a conversation with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin that the actions of Kiev and Washington could provoke an unmanageable escalation.
Prior to that, on July 12, Pentagon deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh reported that Austin had a telephone conversation with Belousov, during which he stressed the importance of keeping communication channels open. No other details were given. The Russian Defense Ministry said they discussed preventing security threats and reducing the risk of possible escalation. The previous conversation between Belousov and Austin took place on June 25.
Later, on July 26, The New York Times, citing sources, wrote that during the phone conversation Belousov and Austin discussed Ukraine's upcoming "covert operation" against Russia.
On Nov. 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Ukraine had used Western long-range weapons against the Russian state, causing the regional conflict to take on elements of a global conflict. He also said that one of Russia's newest medium-range missile systems, the Oreshnik missile, had been tested under combat conditions.
Western countries have stepped up military and financial support for Ukraine against the backdrop of Russia's special operation to protect Donbass, which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, after the situation in the region worsened due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
