January 17 will be a professional holiday for artists
Chairman of the Union of Theater Workers Vladimir Mashkov initiated the establishment of the Day of the Artist in Russia. He announced this at the final meeting of the Secretariat of the Union of Theater Workers of Russia, which was held on December 4 at the Other Stage of "Sovremennik".
Vladimir Mashkov's idea was supported by the first deputy head of the presidential administration, Sergei Kirienko. He heads the organizing committee to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Union of Theatrical Figures of Russia, which will be celebrated in 2026.
"As a date we proposed January 17 - the birthday of the first People's Artist of the USSR, theater reformer Konstantin Sergeyevich Stanislavsky," Mashkov told Izvestiya.
In the late XIX century, an actress of the Imperial Theaters Maria Gavrilovna Savina on this day initiated a similar professional holiday. Theaters in Russia collected assistance for actors in difficult situations. The proceeds from performances were given for a common cause - for the construction of the first House of Stage Veterans in St. Petersburg.
"And we on this day also propose to hold charity events to make it easier for our predecessors. This very unites not only the artists and theater workers, but also the audience," - shared plans Vladimir Mashkov.
If the proposal is accepted, the first Day of the artist will be celebrated on January 17, 2026.
