Cold weather in December will be short-lived, while the month as a whole is likely to be warm. Alexander Shuvalov, a forecaster and head of the Meteo forecasting center, told Izvestia on November 29. He suggested that Muscovites will not expect much snow before January.

"We should tune in for a generally warm December. The cold spells will be short-lived, non-intensive. They will be associated with precipitation, but the total amount of precipitation for the month will not exceed the climatic norm," Shuvalov specified.

According to him, there will be quite a normal amount of snow, and the height of the snow cover may increase to a maximum of 10-15 cm during the month.

"To say whether the second half of winter will be cold - it would be too adventurous to predict such a thing. But the general climatic trend towards higher temperatures can be traced. A repeat of the previous winter cannot be ruled out. For example, the month of January this year turned out to be very cold," the forecaster said.

He added that in probabilistic terms, the winter will probably be warm, although there is one-third probability that one of the months - either February or January - will be slightly below normal.

Earlier, on November 29, Roman Vilfand, scientific director of the Russian Hydrometeorological Center, said that there are no regions in the whole country where temperatures below the norm were predicted in December. Everywhere is expected to be near and above the norm.
