Moscow airports launch an experiment on biometrics for foreigners


From December 1, foreign citizens will start to submit a photograph of the face and fingerprints on arrival and departure from Moscow airports as part of an experiment. This was reported on November 29 by the agency of city news "Moscow".
It is noted that four Moscow airports will participate in the experiment, which is conducted in accordance with the federal law and the decree of the Russian government: Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo and Zhukovsky. Special equipment for photographing and fingerprinting will be installed at air hubs. In case of refusal to surrender biometric data, foreigners will not be able to cross the border.
It is specified that the changes will not affect citizens of Belarus, children under six years old, employees of diplomatic organizations in Russia and their family members, as well as employees of international organizations, their representative offices in Russia.
Earlier, August 30, the Ministry of Finance proposed to conduct an experiment on the biometrics submission by foreigners. According to the project, foreigners and stateless persons will submit biometric data - facial image and fingerprints - when entering the country.
On November 13, the government approved the experiment of biometrics for foreigners entering the Russian Federation through a number of checkpoints. At the first stage, foreigners who enter the Russian Federation through international airports in Moscow (Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo) and Moscow region (Zhukovsky), as well as a road checkpoint in the Orenburg region (Mashtakovo), from December 1, 2024 to June 30, 2026 will pass biometrics at checkpoints.
In the second stage, which will take place from June 30, 2025 to June 30, 2026, for visa-free entry to Russia, foreign citizens will be able to submit biometric data in advance in an app and submit an application with their data and information on the purpose of their visit.
