Tokayev calls CSTO membership a guarantee of security
The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) continues to play an important role in ensuring the security of its member states. This was stated by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev during the CSTO summit in Astana on Thursday, November 28.
"The Collective Security Treaty Organization has become a key structure for ensuring <...> stability in the vast Eurasian space. <...> In the conditions of modern challenges, the CSTO invariably demonstrates its relevance as a guarantor of security for all member states," he said.
The Kazakh leader noted the importance and relevance of the organization in modern conditions. He added that the CSTO is positioned not only as a military alliance, but also as a mechanism that unites member countries to protect their sovereignty and territorial integrity through concerted action, mutual trust and support.
As chairman of the CSTO, Kazakhstan has focused its efforts on strengthening cooperation among member countries, improving crisis response and enhancing the effectiveness of the fight against modern threats (terrorism, cyberattacks, crime and drug trafficking), Tokayev said.
Earlier in the day, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu said on the sidelines of a joint meeting of the Council of Defense Ministers and the CSTO Committee of Secretaries in Astana that Russia's "nuclear umbrella" under the updated nuclear doctrine applies primarily to the Collective Security Treaty Organization countries.
Prior to that, on November 19, the UN General Assembly (GA) adopted a resolution on UN cooperation with the CSTO, in which it noted the bloc 's role in strengthening regional security. In addition, the two organizations will continue to work together to implement the UN's global counter-terrorism strategy and will explore opportunities to enhance cooperation in the field of peacekeeping.
