Family holidays dedicated to moms, dads, grandparents and daughters have become increasingly popular in recent years. There is a special holiday for boys and men - Sons' Day, or Son's Day. Despite the fact that the celebration has no state status, it has its own permanent date - November 22. Read more about the history and traditions of the holiday, as well as what to give a boy and a man on this special day - in the material "Izvestia".

Day of sons in 2024: history and essence of the holiday

Sons' Day, or Son's Day, is a relatively young holiday and unlike other family events has not yet had time to find its history. It is not known for sure when it first began to be celebrated. According to one popular version, the idea emerged in social networks and then was picked up by enthusiasts.

In our country, the celebration gained popularity only in 2021. The exact date of honoring sons is not established, but most often it falls on November 22. There is also a variant - November 25. The holiday continues a series of other family celebrations that are celebrated throughout the year. Natalya Lokteva, a member of the Family Commission of the State Council of the Russian Federation, points out that Mother's Day, Father's Day, Grandparents' Day and Daughters' Day are actively celebrated in Russia.

- In Yakutia, the celebration has been known since 2017 as a regional holiday designed to strengthen the family and family values. But unlike the global one in the Russian republic, this day was celebrated in April instead of November. However, in the Omsk region and Khakassia, the celebration has a tinge of sadness and even tragedy. On this day, mothers whose sons have fallen in battle or died in the service gather at the city's monuments dedicated to their children and lay flowers to the monuments as a sign of grief," the politician said.

On Sons' Day it is customary to honor both grown men and young children. This is a holiday without borders and age limits. From time immemorial, the birth of boys in the family was considered a blessing, they were the main heirs and successors of the family. Today, parents welcome the birth of a son or daughter with equal joy, and the holiday is just an occasion to remind people of parental love, strengthen family ties and bring pleasant moments in life.

Traditions of the Day of Sons: what to give to a boy and a man

Established traditions associated with the celebration have not yet developed, however, like most family celebrations, those who celebrate it prefer to spend time with family. If the day is a weekday, moms and dads just try to leave work early and pick up their boys from kindergarten, give them more time to rest and give them purely symbolic gifts. Adult sons are congratulated by phone or a family dinner is organized for them.

- As a presentation are suitable souvenirs that will be appreciated by representatives of the male sex. For example, little boys are sure to be happy with a new toy, as well as a trip to the movies or attractions - depending on the preferences of family members - Natalia Lokteva gives an example.

Arseny Snedkov, marketing expert and CEO of the Enjoy Digital media group, expressed the opinion that the most expected gift for an adult son is a PlayStation, a smartphone or a car. According to the expert, the teenager can begin to instill financial habits. He suggested the option of an unusual gift for a teenager as well.

"To a teenager I would give a piggy bank. There is such a piggy bank annual, in which you cross out squares and save. This in a teenage child develops the ability to save money, to understand their value, their worth," Snedkov said.

Experts specify that if the holiday has no traditions - it is a great opportunity to come up with your own. For example, make November 22 a family day: go to an amusement park or a play, eat various goodies, watch a movie, play board games or fulfill one small dream of your son. Then the child will look forward to that day later on and know that he or she has a holiday of their own too.

Sons' Day in the world: how the holiday is celebrated in other countries

Traditions of honoring boys have developed in many cultures, and some countries keep them to this day.

In Japan before World War II there was a Boys' Day (it was renamed Children's Day in 1948), the holiday was celebrated in early May. It is believed that it dates back to the reign of Empress Suiko, and the main symbol of the holiday were flags in the form of koinobori carp. They used to be hung outside the house, but now they are decorated with colorful fish that represent all members of the family without exception.

Carp were chosen for a reason. According to an ancient Japanese legend, many, many different fish swam to the unusual Ryumon waterfall. However, the way was too difficult and dangerous, so most of the shoal gave up and returned. Only brave and resilient carp could make it all the way to the end and turn into mighty dragons.

In the same way, little sons, having traveled the long road of growing up, one day become strong and powerful men.

In Sweden, Sons' Day has another name - Lobster Day. Boys wear costumes of these animals and participate in various competitions, concerts and theater performances. The holiday takes place on August 7.

Boys' Day in Germany is celebrated in April. Germans emphasized the professional orientation of the future man. Every year at the national level, young people (starting at the age of 12) are helped to learn about existing specialties, so that each child could more easily decide what he wants to do in adulthood.

Brazil celebrates Children's Day on October 12. Unlike other countries, the holiday has never been gender specific and, in fact, it has only one purpose - to entertain children and make them feel good. More sweets and games, less adult inhibitions. Toy stores, circuses and amusement parks are overflowing with happy children and their parents on this day.

Sons' Day: what significance the holiday has in modern society

In modern families, there is often not enough time for personal communication, especially when children grow up and start an independent life. Sons' Day is a good opportunity to remind the child of the love and support that he can always find at home.

For parents, it is an occasion to be proud of their children's accomplishments. Even a simple greeting can be a great motivation for young boys, to show them that their efforts and aspirations do not go unnoticed.

In addition, this day is also an opportunity to discuss in a broader context the role of men in modern society.

The holiday emphasizes the importance of positive examples of sons for the growing generations. It promotes positive behaviors and the use of good examples from the lives of sons, which can influence their peers and younger brothers.

This falls within the trend of increasing overall emotional intelligence and a world where openness in expressing love plays a key role.

The celebration makes us reflect on the responsibility that sons have to their families and society. Such a day can be an incentive to form better life priorities and values that will be passed on from generation to generation.
