- France called sanctions against Russia the reason for the rise in gas prices in the country
The rising cost of gas in France is linked to the European authorities' refusal to resolve the Ukrainian crisis and lift anti-Russian sanctions. This opinion was expressed on October 10 by Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, leader of the Get Up, France party and candidate for president of the republic in the 2027 elections.
According to the politician, since the beginning of the year, gas prices in France have increased by 42.4%. He noted that the cost of fuel continued to rise in the fall: in September, the figure increased by 5.6%, in October — by 6.3%, and in November — by another 6.6%.
"This is a very concrete result of the European leaders' refusal to establish peace in Ukraine and lift sanctions against Russia," reads a post on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
Dupont-Aignan called the current situation "economic and social suicide" for Europe. At the same time, he noted that gas is much cheaper in the USA and China.
The head of the European Commission's press service, Paula Pinho, said at a briefing in Brussels on October 1 that gas prices in the European Union had increased by 140% since February, and the cost of diesel fuel had doubled. In turn, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said on October 6 that the share of Russian gas in EU imports had decreased from 45% to 12%, and the EU intended to completely abandon supplies from Russia.
The Politico newspaper reported on October 9 that the EU is facing gas shortages ahead of winter, which could lead to a sharp increase in utility bills. It is emphasized that Europe is under pressure, among other things, due to the upcoming European ban on long-term contracts for the supply of Russian LNG, which is due to enter into force in January.
