The statement by Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth about the public broadcast of the execution by firing squad took representatives of the US military and the US army by surprise. This was reported on October 10 by CNN.

According to the broadcaster's sources, many military and Pentagon officials first heard about the idea of a public broadcast during Hegset's interview with blogger Jack Posobios.

The initiative has attracted criticism from active military personnel, veterans, and representatives of both leading parties in the United States. Vice President J.D. Vance doubted that the broadcast would actually take place, and stated that he would not watch it.

According to CNN, the military is also discussing the possible psychological consequences for the soldiers who will have to carry out the sentence. In addition, it is not yet clear whether the military personnel will be able to refuse to participate in the execution.

On October 8, Hegseth announced that the public would be allowed to observe the execution of Major Nidal Malik Hassan. It was clarified that the execution by firing squad scheduled for December 3 would be the first such execution in the US Armed Forces in several decades.

US President Donald Trump has authorized the execution of Nidal Malik Hassan, convicted of attacking the Fort Hood military base in 2009. On November 5, 2009, Hassan staged a shooting at the Fort Hood military base in Texas, which killed 13 people and injured 32 others.
