- The Ministry of Education of Russia has defined rules for the use of AI by schoolchildren
The Russian Ministry of Education has issued guidelines on how to use artificial intelligence (AI) in schools. The document distinguishes between the tasks that can be solved using AI and the limitations that apply. This was announced on September 26 by the press service of the Ministry of Education.
"Artificial intelligence is already becoming a part of the educational environment and opens up new opportunities for teachers and schoolchildren. At the same time, it is important to understand that digital technologies should help the teacher, not replace him, and the student should understand the educational material more deeply, rather than perform tasks for him," the ministry quoted Sergey Kravtsov, Minister of Education of the Russian Federation.
According to the guidelines, the AI teacher is allowed at all stages — from preparing for the lesson to analyzing the results. You can use it to make notes, tests, presentations, diagrams, and videos, select sources, and prepare assignments of various levels of complexity, including materials for children with disabilities. Academic performance analytics, logging, reports, and monitoring are also allowed. At the same time, the teacher is obliged to check any material created by AI: for facts, compliance with standards, methodological correctness and age restrictions.
Personal data protection is prescribed separately. Information about students, parents, and school staff, as well as their grades, characteristics, and jobs, cannot be uploaded to AI services. In public services, especially if the data allows you to identify the child, except in cases where a separate consent has been provided.
In addition, parents should be informed about the use of artificial intelligence in the educational process. For example, you can do this at a parent-teacher meeting by explaining which tools are used and for which tasks.
Students can use AI independently with age restrictions. In grades 1-4, such an opportunity is not provided. In grades 5-9, with the teacher's permission, to search for information, explain complex concepts, and visualize. In 10-11 years, project and research work is added: data analysis, predictive models, calculations.
It is noted that AI is prohibited at the intermediate and final examinations, as well as where the student must show his own knowledge. It is forbidden to give the text created by the neural network to both teachers and students for their work. At the same time, AI text detection services are not considered unconditional proof of the student's use of neural networks - the decision is made by the teacher.
"The need for guidelines on the use of artificial intelligence in schools has become more and more pronounced in the teaching community, and we have tried to respond to it with methodological recommendations that help to place the right accents," Kravtsov added.
The press service of the Ministry of Education of Russia reported on August 21 that an extracurricular course "Artificial Intelligence and Information Security" will be taught in Russian schools from the second quarter of the 2026/27 academic year. This course will be one of the innovations in Russian schools in the new academic year.
