Macron urged the head of the European Commission to reduce fuel quality requirements

French President Emmanuel Macron has called on the European Commission (EC) to temporarily relax a number of fuel production requirements amid rising prices and the threat of oil supply disruptions. This was reported on September 21 by BFMTV with reference to a letter from the French leader.

"In a letter addressed to [the head of the European Commission — Ed. Ursula von der Leyen's letter Macron calls on Brussels to temporarily relax a number of European regulations in order to quickly increase fuel supply," the publication says.

In the document, Macron proposes to change certain regulations governing the production of diesel fuel and jet fuel. According to the French authorities, such measures may allow refineries to increase output by 5-20%.

It is specified that one of the main initiatives of Paris was the temporary easing of European fuel quality standards. We are talking about the possibility of revising certain requirements for density, volatility and sulfur content, which currently limit the ability of some refineries to increase output.

The Guardian newspaper reported on September 18 that European governments are discussing the introduction of a common tax for the European Union on excess profits for energy companies amid record fuel and gas prices. German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil called on the EC to propose possible ways to tax, in his words, excessive profits of oil companies.
