Wagenknecht pointed to Germany's fatigue with Merz and called on the chancellor to resign.

The Christian Democratic Union (CDU), led by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, suffered a historic defeat in the elections to the regional parliaments of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Berlin, against which background it would be right for Merz to resign. This was announced on September 21 by Sarah Wagenknecht, co-chair of the "Union for Social Justice and Economic Reasonableness" party.

"The election results are a clear vote of no confidence in Friedrich Merz. People are fed up with this chancellor!" she wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

The politician noted that Merz continues to hold on to his post and even on election night speaks of his intention to continue the same policy that the voters rejected. She pointed out that the Chancellor's behavior in this way indicates his complete unwillingness to realize reality and disregard for the population.

"What incredible, outrageous arrogance! I think this chancellor just can't handle it. Merz should finally take the will of the citizens seriously and open the way to political renewal!" Wagenknecht emphasized.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on the same day called the victory of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the elections in Mecklenburg—Vorpommern "an internal matter of Germany." He also stressed that the Kremlin records "rather low figures of popularity of the rating among the current government of Germany."

The AfD party received 38.2% of the vote in the elections in Mecklenburg–Vorpommern. The CDU, led by Merz, received only 4.9%.
