The neurologist named ways to reduce the body's reaction to a change in the weather
Headache, weakness, drowsiness, and pressure drops may worsen with sudden changes in temperature and atmospheric conditions. However, the severity of such reactions can be reduced if the individual characteristics of the body are taken into account and a stable regime is maintained. Alexey Mamatov, a doctor of restorative medicine, neurologist and founder of the Academy of Systemic Health, told "Izvestia" on September 20.
According to the expert, it is impossible to completely get rid of weather dependence, but it is possible to reduce the number of factors that make the body's reaction more noticeable.
"Usually a person says, "I'm weather-dependent," and that's the end of the search for reasons. But it is important to understand exactly how this manifests itself: one person's blood pressure reacts to a change in the weather, another's nervous system, and the third has a stronger headache or heart failure. Therefore, the approach should be individual," Mamatov said.
The doctor called monitoring of health indicators one of the ways to reduce the severity of symptoms. It is recommended that people who are prone to pressure fluctuations regularly measure it at the same time and record changes in their well-being. According to the expert, this approach helps to understand whether the deterioration is really related to the weather and which indicators are changing.
It is also important to gradually adapt to the cold. Before going outside after staying in a warm room for a long time, the doctor advises you to stretch a little — walk, do exercises for your feet, ankles and shoulders. This is especially true for people who spend most of the day in a sitting position.
Regular physical activity remains another factor in protecting the body. In autumn, many people reduce their walks and move less, which reduces the endurance of the cardiovascular system. According to Mamatov, daily walking and short motor pauses help maintain muscle function and improve venous outflow.
The doctor advises paying special attention to sleep, drinking habits and the amount of caffeine. Lack of sleep, dehydration, and excess coffee or strong tea can increase headaches, palpitations, and feelings of fatigue. At the same time, the approach to prevention depends on the characteristics of blood pressure. With a tendency to high blood pressure, it is important to reduce stress levels, control the amount of salt in the diet, and use relaxation techniques.
At low blood pressure, on the contrary, it is necessary to maintain sufficient fluid intake, avoid sudden rises and use a light warm-up to increase tone.
"One of the most common mistakes is to give the same advice to a person with high and low blood pressure. If with a hypertensive reaction the task is to relieve excessive vascular and nervous tone, then with hypotension, on the contrary, it is important to maintain vascular tone," the doctor said.
According to the expert, with a tendency to palpitations, it is also worth reducing the influence of provoking factors — lack of sleep, alcohol, excess caffeine and dehydration. At the same time, new or pronounced rhythm disturbances cannot be explained solely by changes in the weather. Such conditions require medical diagnosis.
"Weather dependence often increases because several factors are simultaneously superimposed on the body: lack of sleep, stress, lack of movement, dietary changes, and dehydration. By removing at least some of them, we are already reducing the burden on the regulatory system," Mamatov said.
According to the doctor, the main task is not to stop noticing changes in the weather, but to make the cardiovascular and nervous systems more stable. At the same time, pain or pressure behind the sternum, severe shortness of breath, fainting, speech disorders, weakness in the extremities, or a sharp deterioration in the condition cannot be attributed to weather dependence. In such cases, urgent medical attention is needed.
Evgeny Kokin, a cardiologist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), Candidate of Medical Sciences, said on September 9 that sudden temperature fluctuations in Moscow and the Moscow region can become an additional burden for people with cardiovascular diseases. Patients with hypertension, rhythm disturbances and heart failure should be especially attentive during the period of temperature fluctuations.
