The priest explained the rules of using the wedding ring from his first marriage

It is undesirable to use a ring from your first marriage when getting engaged to a new spouse, since it remains associated with a previous attempt to start a family. Priest Viktor Nikishov told the magazine "Thomas" about this.

"To use a ring from a previous marriage (not even a consecrated one) for this is to unwittingly introduce an echo of the past into a new union. The man's marriage didn't work out, and this item will be a constant reminder of this story," Nikishov said.

The priest explained that in the Orthodox understanding, betrothal is the first and inseparable part of the sacrament of marriage, which is performed immediately before the wedding. At the same time, rings are not just a symbol of engagement, but a sign of eternal union, blessed by God.

According to him, during the betrothal, the priest prays for the consecration of the rings, after which he puts them on to the bride and groom and changes them three times. This symbolizes the connection of their lives and the willingness of the spouses to make up for each other in marriage.

Nikishov noted that even if the ring was not consecrated and did not participate in the sacrament of the wedding, people still put into it the meaning of starting a new joint journey. Therefore, using a thing related to a previous marriage can be perceived as a reminder of the past.

"I would recommend purchasing simple, smooth rings (traditionally, gold comes first, then silver, or vice versa), as is customary in the Orthodox tradition, and starting family life from scratch," the priest concluded.
