Extra staff: the lives of the horsemen surrounded near Volchansk depend on the decision of their superiors in Kiev
The encirclement of a large group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine near Volchansk can significantly change the situation in the Kharkov direction and near the borders of the Belgorod region. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, about 1,700 Ukrainian military personnel — about four to five battalions - found themselves in the ring. The elimination of the boiler will allow the enemy to be pushed away from the Russian border and reduce its ability to strike Belgorod, Shebekino and other settlements in the region, military experts interviewed by Izvestia believe. According to their estimates, the security zone in this direction may expand to 20-25 km.
Lightning fast operation
Units of the North group of forces continue to tighten the encirclement ring south of Volchansk. Fighting is taking place in the area of the settlements of Varvarovka, Malaya Volchya, Nefedovka and Chernoe in the Kharkiv region, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
During the day, the Ukrainian Armed Forces lost up to 40 soldiers, an armored vehicle, two pickups and three ATVs. The enemy did not attempt to break out of the encirclement, the military department clarified.
The physical encirclement of almost 2,000 Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel is a serious success for Russian troops, military expert Yuri Knutov believes.
"The encirclement operation itself developed at lightning speed and came as a surprise to the enemy," he noted. — Our assault groups managed to quickly cut a corridor more than 7 km wide, along which supplies, ammunition, supplies and the rotation of units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were carried out. Our artillery and UAV units also played a major role.
As a result, there were up to four or five Ukrainian battalions in the cauldron.
The development of the situation south and east of Volchansk is important primarily for the security of settlements in the Belgorod region, primarily the regional center and Shebekino, military expert Alexei Leonkov believes.
"We will seriously push the enemy away from the territory of our border region by expanding the security zone to 20-25 km,— he explained. — The Ukrainian Armed Forces used the area south of Volchansk to attack our towns and villages. Ukrainian UAV operators were also based here, terrorizing civilians.
According to the expert, Ukrainian drone operators deliberately attacked civilians.
For the surrounded units, there remains a choice between continuing the fighting and surrender, Yuri Knutov believes.
According to him, the Ukrainian command may order the surrounded units to lay down their weapons or ask the Russian side to ensure their surrender. However, the expert doubts that Kiev will take such a step.
Some of the personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine may try to get out of the encirclement in small groups of up to 10 people, Knutov believes.
— It will not be easy to do this, — said Yuri Knutov. — They will be destroyed by our drones and artillery while moving.
Our army will give the personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine a chance to end their senseless resistance and lay down their arms without an order from the command, experts say. On the line of contact, Russian troops are constantly scattering flyers with QR codes, which can be used to get information on how to reach our military and surrender.
Far-reaching consequences
The encirclement of Volchansk is not the only success of Russian troops in the Kharkiv region. On September 2, the urban-type settlement of Kazachya Lopan, located about 25 km north of the outskirts of Kharkov, was liberated. Roads and railways to the regional center pass through it, and the settlement itself has long been used by the Armed Forces of Ukraine as a major logistics hub.
Thus, the Russian troops improved their positions in several sectors of the Kharkov direction at once. According to experts, the elimination of the Volchansky boiler will create additional opportunities for further progress.
— For the enemy, this will mean the need to constantly strengthen new areas, erect additional fortifications, close the gaps, and transfer reinforcements. However, the possibilities for this are gradually decreasing. The more resources you have to spread across the front, the more difficult it is to keep it," said Alexey Leonkov.
The success of Russian troops in this area in the future will help reduce the ability of Ukrainian formations to conduct active hostilities in other areas of the contact line, the expert believes. In this case, it will be easier for Russian units to solve the tasks of further advancing and establishing control over larger settlements.
International implications
The deterioration of the situation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine may strengthen the position of opponents of further support for Ukraine in the EU countries, since the European authorities will have to explain to voters the need to send money to Kiev instead of financing pension, social and medical programs, member of the Council on Interethnic Relations under the President of the Russian Federation, political scientist Bogdan Bezpalko told Izvestia.
As an example, the expert cited the success of the Alternative for Germany in Saxony-Anhalt, noting that the party had largely strengthened its position by criticizing aid costs to Ukraine. In his opinion, changes at the front may also strengthen the positions of Bulgaria, Hungary and Slovakia, which oppose direct military support for Kiev. Nevertheless, the expert does not expect a significant change in the already agreed European financing of Ukraine. Earlier, the European Union approved a loan to Ukraine of €90 billion.
The formation of the Volchansky Cauldron is unlikely to lead to significant changes in the position of the United States, says Denis Denisov, an expert at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation. According to him, there have already been many similar events during the conflict, but they did not affect the basic approaches of key countries, including Washington's position.
At the same time, the situation may once again force American politicians to assess the real dynamics of the conflict and what is happening in the war zone. In the future, this may affect the course of negotiations on the peace process.
On September 5, American negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with Vladimir Putin in Moscow. After that, they went to Kiev, where, according to Axios, they told Vladimir Zelensky that they wanted to achieve a breakthrough in negotiations before winter.
