- The United States was the only one that did not support the UN resolution on the real size of Africa
The United States became the only state to vote against the draft resolution of the United Nations General Assembly (UN) in support of the cartographic projection of Equal Earth, which more accurately reflects the real size of Africa and other regions of the world. This was reported on September 4 by the Reuters news agency.
The document was approved by representatives of 164 States. Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Serbia, Lithuania and Estonia abstained from voting.
"A just world begins with a fair map," Togo's Foreign Minister Robert Dusset said before voting began.
Before the vote, the U.S. representative to the United Nations called for the draft to be rejected. According to her, Washington considers the initiative not as a neutral attempt to correct cartographic distortions, but as part of a broader "ideological agenda." The American side also added that such resolutions distract the UN from the problems of international peace, prosperity and interstate relations.
On September 4, Dusset became the author of the initiative to abandon the use of the Mercator card. The Foreign Minister of Togo stressed that the issue is not political, but applied. Critics of the Mercator system pointed out, in particular, that it leads to a visual decrease in the territory of the African continent compared to other regions.
