Companies from China are increasingly using the Northern Sea Route to transport goods to European countries. Zhou Lijun, Chairman of the Union of Chinese Entrepreneurs in Russia, told Izvestia about this on September 2 on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum.

In an interview with Izvestia correspondent Alexei Poltoranin, he said that in August of this year, the first ships from Chinese ports had already arrived in Murmansk. According to him, the use of the Northern Sea Route makes it possible to reduce delivery times by almost 21 days and reduce logistics costs by about 30% compared to the traditional European route.

"The most important thing is that new routes have been opened from China to Europe via the Northern Sea Route. Of course, China supports such a project," Lijun stressed.

Currently, cars and spare parts from China are mainly transported along this route. Fertilizers, timber processing products and other materials can be delivered in the opposite direction. In the future, as the entrepreneur noted, the Northern Sea Route can also be used for the supply of electronics and high-tech equipment.

The Governor of the Murmansk Region, Andrey Chibis, said on August 23 that the Russian Arctic is of strategic importance for the development of sea routes. The authorities take into account possible threats and take measures to ensure the safety of navigation. Chibis noted that preparations are underway for possible pirate attacks on ships traveling along the Northern Sea Route.

In June, Russian Minister for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic Alexei Chekunkov noted that the Northern Sea Route is a cornerstone in the goal of achieving a trade turnover of $ 300 billion with China. Chekunkov noted that about 80% of this volume is accounted for by export cargoes potentially aimed at China. First of all, we are talking about liquefied natural gas, oil, fertilizers and ores of non-ferrous metals.
