The leader of the Democratic minority of the US House of Representatives, Hakim Jeffries, said that some of his party members oppose the bill to tighten sanctions against Russia. He made the corresponding statement on August 31 at a press conference, answering questions from journalists.

He clarified that Democratic Congressmen Richard Neal and Gregory Meeks "strongly opposed this bill because it creates the risk of granting [US President] Donald Trump and his administration powers regarding duties and sanctions," TASS quoted him as saying. According to Jeffries, Democrats fear that the president and his team "will abuse" these new powers.
