The doctor named the main cause of skin changes after 40 years
After 40 years of age, the skin of the face can lose elasticity faster, become drier, and the contours of the face become less clear. These changes are associated not only with age, but also with hormonal changes in the body. On September 1, Tatiana Evstigneeva, a cosmetologist, endocrinologist, nutritionist, and founder of the COSMETOLOGY Premium clinic, told Izvestia about this.
According to the expert, the perimenopause period plays an important role in skin changes — a transitional stage that begins several years before menopause. At this time, the level of estrogen gradually changes, which affects the condition of the skin and connective tissue.
Estrogen is involved in maintaining the synthesis of collagen and elastin, and also affects the hydration and elasticity of the skin. When its level decreases, the skin may become thinner, drier and less elastic.
"The decrease in estrogen affects not only the condition of the skin, but also the structure of the face as a whole. The quality of connective tissue changes, and the volume of fat packets decreases. This leads to the fact that the contours of the face become less clear, nasolabial folds appear, the corners of the mouth droop, and a so—called puppet effect forms," Evstigneeva explained.
During perimenopause, the activity of the sebaceous glands also decreases, which makes the skin retain moisture worse. As a result, the surface of the face may become duller, and wrinkles may become more noticeable.
According to the doctor, the usual care during this period may cease to have the same effect, since the skin requires not only additional hydration, but also the support of a protective barrier.
"The first thing that is important is to review home care. The skin needs products with lipids, ceramides, peptides and antioxidants. They will help strengthen the barrier and slow down moisture loss," the specialist noted.
Evstigneeva also warned that you should not use the active ingredients yourself, including retinol, without understanding the skin's characteristics. According to her, improper selection of drugs and dosages can increase dryness and make age-related changes more noticeable.
In addition to home care, the doctor named cosmetic procedures among the possible methods of skin support. According to her, threads made of absorbable materials can be used to improve tissue structure and moderate facial oval correction, and hardware techniques that stimulate collagen production help increase skin density.
At the same time, the specialist emphasized that the result of such procedures depends on the individual characteristics of the body and requires an integrated approach. According to Evstigneeva, special attention should be paid to hormonal status. If the changes are pronounced, the question of possible hormone replacement therapy can be discussed with a gynecologist after the examination.
"It is important to understand that changes during perimenopause are not a verdict, but a task that can be solved. The main thing is not to ignore them and not try to use the same methods that worked in 30 years. What was suitable before, after 40 may already be ineffective," the doctor concluded.
On August 17, dermatologist, Doctor of Medical Sciences Yulia Gallyamova told how bed linen affects the skin condition. According to her, this organ has its own microbiome, a community of microorganisms that helps maintain protective functions. With conditions such as acne, rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis and eczema, the skin becomes more sensitive to external stimuli.
