German Chancellor Merz called defense spending more important than parental benefits

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), said that defense spending has a higher priority than government spending on parental benefits. He expressed the corresponding opinion on August 30 in an interview with the ARD TV channel, which was published on the Tagesschau YouTube channel.

Commenting on the growth of the defense budget against the background of a reduction in social benefits to parents, the head of government noted that currently the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) they do not demonstrate the necessary combat readiness.

"And what is the point of the most generous child care allowance if we are losing our freedom and peace in Europe is under threat?" Merz asked rhetorically.

According to the Chancellor, the current security situation requires a review of budget priorities in favor of strengthening the country's defense capability.
