Compare the chips: Lukashenko flew to Putin on the eve of the SCO summit in Bishkek
Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko held talks in Novo-Ogaryovo. The leaders of the Union State discussed trade and economic ties, joint projects and cooperation in the international arena. The trade turnover between the two countries has already exceeded $52 billion, and cooperation in high-tech industries is reaching a new level. Experts note that the union of Moscow and Minsk not only helps to overcome information isolation and maintain the balance of power in the CIS, but also actually builds a single scientific and technological shield.
How are relations between Moscow and Minsk developing?
On August 29, Vladimir Putin held talks with President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko at the Novo-Ogaryovo residence. The Belarusian leader's working visit to Russia began on August 27. The program of these days turned out to be intense: the day before, he met with Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, and today with his Russian counterpart.
Alexander Lukashenko is a frequent guest in Russia. This visit was his tenth in the last two years, and the last time the heads of state met was at the end of June 2026 in Valdai in the Novgorod region.
"It seems like we saw each other not so long ago, but, as I always say in such cases, the dynamics of our relations are such that more and more new points appear all the time, which need to be paid attention to, which need to be coordinated and adjusted," Vladimir Putin said.
The Russian President stressed that trade and economic cooperation between the two countries remains strong, despite external restrictions. The Head of State said that the volume of mutual trade amounted to almost $52 billion last year, and increased by another 12.5% in the first six months of this year. He also added that the volume of direct Russian investments has reached $4.5 billion, and 2.5 thousand enterprises with Russian participation are already operating in the republic.
Alexander Lukashenko expressed confidence that the final trade turnover this year will significantly exceed the record figures of 2025. The parties paid special attention to high technologies. Vladimir Putin noted that thanks to the long-term efforts of Minsk, Belarus has preserved and increased the scientific and industrial potential created during the Soviet era. Today, these developments have become the basis for joint breakthrough projects.
Microelectronics is becoming a key topic of integration. A few days before the visit, First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov visited Belarusian enterprises and worked out a format for cooperation with his colleagues. Alexander Lukashenko expressed full confidence in the technological sovereignty of the Union State:
— I want to tell you the unanimous opinion of your government, my point of view, our government: we absolutely will not remain "naked" here without these microelectronics products. We absolutely create everything together today. Tomorrow we will reach a very high level. Therefore, it is not a question of finding a form, as in other areas of cooperation," the Belarusian leader stressed.
What is the reason for Lukashenko's visit to Moscow?
An important part of the agenda was the discussion of joint work in the international arena. A meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Union State is planned in the near future, as well as the participation of leaders in a series of major meetings, including the UN, CIS and SCO venues — the summit of the latter will begin in Bishkek next week. In 2024, Belarus officially became the tenth full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. According to Lukashenko, the very dynamics of global processes pushes countries to closely coordinate and jointly overcome any difficulties.
The dynamics of the meetings confirms that constant "clock checking" has long been a vital necessity. According to political analyst Dmitry Yelovsky, Minsk remains not just a key trading partner for Moscow, but its main ally in the international arena. It's one thing to exchange goods, but it's quite another to present a united front on global platforms.
The leaders are approaching the upcoming SCO summit in Bishkek with a fully coordinated position. At the same time, Belarus' position helps to maintain a balance in the CIS, especially against the background of Armenia's policy of rapprochement with the European Union. In the economy, the allies are reaching a new level of integration: the launch of a single digital signature will be the most important step.
Political scientist Tatiana Kosacheva added that the joint work of Moscow and Minsk in the framework of the upcoming SCO summit strengthens the national security of both countries. By breaking through information isolation, Russia and Belarus are broadcasting their agenda to the whole world and laying the foundation for a multipolar order — without external pressure and protectorate. In addition, the SCO platform provides practical benefits.: These are new logistics corridors, energy security and direct access to the growing markets of the global South.
It is possible that the leaders of Russia and Belarus could also touch on the Ukrainian issue. Alexander Lukashenko said yesterday that Minsk and Moscow would solve a "common problem" in southern Belarus and western Russia.
Thus, the negotiations in Novo-Ogaryovo once again showed that the Union State not only covers urgent needs, from food to fuel, but also confidently builds a common scientific, technological and foreign policy shield.
