For many children and teenagers, the beginning of the school year is not only the joy of meeting friends, but also a cause for alarm. They are especially concerned about their relationships with classmates and their return to the school rhythm. Psychologists advise discussing the upcoming year with the child in advance and making a clear plan — this will help reduce the degree of tension and get ready for school. How to support a student before September 1 and maintain his emotional stability throughout the year is in the Izvestia article.

What are schoolchildren afraid of?

Before starting school, teenagers worry more than their parents: one in three meets September 1 with excitement, and one in four with anxiety and anxiety, according to a study by the Absolut-Help charitable foundation and the Tiburon agency. The results were reviewed by Izvestia.

Apathy was reported by 22% of the children surveyed, fear is experienced by 19%, and irritation by 16%. Another 9% admitted that they feel ashamed.

Parents, on the contrary, feel pride, joy and inspiration. Besides, September 1st makes them nostalgic. Despite the fact that 40% of adults are still a little worried before the start of the school year, their overall emotional background is positive.

The main source of teenagers' anxiety is the upcoming exams and final assessments. In addition, they are afraid of problems with socialization, adaptation and emotional state in general.

— I'm going to 11th grade, the last year of school, exams, then admission. I'm worried that nothing will work out, I don't know what awaits me next," admitted the 17-year-old student.

— I'm afraid of the approach of the OGE and the Unified State Exam, classmates, embarrassing situations and possible ridicule, — said a 15-year-old student.

Bullying, which is increasingly entering the digital space, is a separate problem. The number of high-profile episodes of cyberbullying in the summer of 2026 increased by 6% compared to the same period last year, the Security 2.0 monitoring center told Izvestia.

And for children with disabilities, the beginning of the school year is even more exciting, as it violates the established holiday regime and introduces additional difficulties, Yulia Shevyakhova, director of the Absolut School, told Izvestia.

— The key to adapting children with special needs to school is predictability. It is important to establish a daily routine: get up and go to bed at the same time, and develop habits. The day before, you can go to school for exploration: show the child the classroom, the dining room and the toilet to reduce anxiety about the unknown," she said.

Why is dialogue with a child important?

Adults and children need to listen and hear each other, summed up the author of the work, Svetlana Novikova, head of analytics and research at the Absolut-Help Foundation.

— It is important for parents not to limit themselves to control and pride in the child, and for children not to lock themselves into their feelings, — she emphasized. — You can support each other only through a lively dialogue in which any emotions have a right to exist.

According to Natalia Kravchenko, a member of the Presidential Council for the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights, adults often perceive the school year as a series of organizational and academic tasks. And for a teenager, school is not only about studying, but also about communication, finding one's place in a team and taking the first steps towards choosing a future.

"At the same time, adults are not always ready to help a child cope with such tasks," she stressed. — The system itself sets a different focus: academic results. As a result, a teenager is often left alone with experiences that directly affect both his condition and his ability to learn.

It is important to give children the opportunity to participate in making decisions about their lives, Dmitry Fishbein, CEO of the Absolut-Help Foundation, told Izvestia.

"This is part of growing up: instead of ready—made instructions, you should ask questions that help teenagers figure out the situation on their own and draw conclusions," he stressed.

Not all children can share their experiences with their loved ones. According to a study by the Security 2.0 monitoring center, up to 40% of Russian schoolchildren use neural networks to discuss personal problems. And about 10% tell artificial intelligence what they don't tell their parents and friends.

— The most disturbing story is the substitution of real friendship and communication with artificial dialogues with a smart car. This is happening all over the world and in our country too," said Elena Sutormina, First Vice President of the Russian Peace Foundation and head of the monitoring center. — AI, neural networks are a good, interesting and promising technology, but it should be an auxiliary, additional support for people in education, education and work. It's bad if AI becomes the only window into the world for someone.

Experts point out that excessive openness and widespread dissemination of personal data can provoke harassment.

Causes of childhood anxiety

Almost all schoolchildren worry before the start of the school year, Natalia Naumova, a child psychologist, confirmed to Izvestia. According to her, first-graders worry about the unknown and novelty, and teenagers are concerned about a wider range of issues — from appearance and relationships with classmates to academic success and the future.

— It is important to create more supports for the child, then the anxiety will recede, — the psychologist emphasized. — In the summer, the student felt good, he formed an idea of himself. And weak grades may appear at school, which will show that he is not successful.

In addition, teenagers are afraid that when classes begin, they will not have time for hobbies, friends and recreation. Anxiety can also be increased by the heavy workload and excessive demands of teachers, Natalia Naumova noted. It is worth choosing one or two subjects that are well given to the student and finding a hobby to your liking.: this way he will see his achievements and feel more confident.

According to the psychologist, it is important for parents to explain to the child that his current efforts will allow him to succeed in the future. Before September 1, you can discuss upcoming tasks together and make a plan — this will help the student calmly adjust to his studies and better cope with the workload.
