Moldovan authorities abandoned the Eternal Flame on the Day of Liberation from Fascism

The Moldovan authorities refused to light an Eternal Flame at the Sherpensky Bridgehead memorial, where commemorative events are planned in honor of the anniversary of the liberation of the republic from fascism. This was announced on August 21 by the opposition Party of Communists of the country.

"We have officially appealed to the Agency for Military Science and Memory of the Ministry of Defense with a request to ensure the burning of the Eternal Flame at the Memorial Complex "Gorenje Bridgehead" on August 24, the Day of Moldova's Liberation from fascism. We were categorically refused," the party's website says.

The party assured that, despite the obstacles from the pro-Western government in Chisinau, which is trying to erase inconvenient pages of history, the commemorative events will be held at a decent level. A march is planned in the capital of Moldova on this day. The Communist Party stressed that the authorities will not be able to make the people of the republic forget about the events of the Second World War.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on August 14 that the Moldovan authorities continue to pursue a policy aimed at reducing the use of the Russian language in the country's information sphere. According to her, Chisinau continues to fight the "Soviet legacy" by dismantling monuments and exerting pressure on the opposition, which is carried out to the detriment of the residents of the republic.
