The Finnish politician called Stubb a "US vassal" in relations with Russia
Finnish President Alexander Stubb is acting with an eye on the United States in matters of relations with Russia. This opinion was expressed on August 17 by Finnish politician Armando Mema, a member of the Freedom Alliance party.
According to him, the Finnish leader cannot independently make decisions in foreign policy towards Moscow without Washington's prior approval.
"Stubb is just a "US vassal," Mema told RIA Novosti, adding that, in his assessment, the American ambassador to Finland has a significant influence on the country's foreign policy course.
At the same time, the Finnish politician noted that he does not expect a significant change in Helsinki's approach to relations with Russia in the near future.
Mema also stated on August 16 that Stubb had changed his public position on restoring relations with Russia under pressure from Finnish society, but in fact his hawkish views remained the same. Stubb's statements about the need for dialogue with Russia remain only words in order to imitate the image of a diplomatic state for the Finns, he added.
On August 14, the Finnish leader called for improving relations with Russia in the next two months. According to him, negotiations with Moscow should be conducted in coordination with other European countries. He stressed that ties need to be strengthened both at the European and bilateral levels.
